Haq Paraya Nanka

First Mehl

To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like him (Muslim) eating pork, or him (Hindu) eating beef.

Guru, Peer (Spiritual Guide) will support, if we do not eat those carcasses.

By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.

By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.

O Nanak, from trash talk, only trash is obtained. ||2||

  1. Hi,
I have been listening to these shabd now. Was wondering why in the first line you have mentioned Muslim and Hindu?
I don't see anywhere Hindu Muslim being mentioned.

  2. Hi Beer,

You're right that the Shabad doesn't directly mentioned words Hindu or Muslim although they were implied by the mention of forbidden foods and various teeka-kars have also interpreted it that way. However, I've put the words Hindu and Muslim in brackets to make it more apparent. Thanks for your suggestion!

    1. Our gurus never denied or accepted anything they teach us the right sight of viewing things(nazaria) e.g if i tell you that the person has eaten beef or pork, you will surely saying holy crap !! but if complete my sentence be saying he was hungry for 4 days in a jungle with only some animals around him.You will be delighted and salute for this

    2. As per your logic or nazaria, if the person is hungry then it is okay for him to kill and eat animals; if the person is poor then it is okay to steal; if the person is horny then it is okay to rape and if the person need some organ then it is okay to kidnap and harvest the organs of the victim.

    4. Actually Kabir Ji was firm believer of AHIMSA(non violence) so he tried entreat both Hindus and Muslims not to kill and eat animals. We see many such doha in Guru Granth Saheb Ji from him. But also Guru Nanak Dev Ji said to not fight over eating meat right or not because we those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour meat at night.

He said we are produced from the blood of our mothers and fathers, but we say we do not eat fish or meat because it is sin.

My understanding (it may be wrong but here is what I learned / meri sikh from this is) - test imply and then believe. If you are not comfortable with violence involved with animals then don't eat mass. If you are in position you have no other option then continue eating mass. What matters most is Belief in spiritual understanding and meditation. Practice in spirituality.

Which is called meat, and which is called leaf? In which sin resides?
      ----Guru Nanak Dev Ji

  7. At that time, keeping in mind the elegance, these lines have been uttered...pigs and cows have been treated as examples.
