Gurbani starts with the recitation of ੴ but there is not much awareness about the meaning of the word among the community. This post will try to explain its meaning based on the verses from Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji.
Etymology: ੴ it is divided into three parts viz., ੧, ਓ ਅਤੇ and it is spoken as 'ਇਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ'. ੧ means one. 'ਓ' is Sanskrit word and as per Amar Kosh, it means Brahm. Third part is , whose recitation is 'ਕਾਰ'. 'ਕਾਰ' is Sanskrit suffix which means something which is immutable. Thus, ੴ means that One Om which is immutable i.e. one timeless and unchanging entity which is all pervading. (as per the commentary by Professor Sahib Singh)
Pronunciation: The pronunciation of ੴ is little tricky as it requires the knowledge of the concept of Anusvaar. The pronunciation of OM in ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ is different from ਓਅੰ as the former is preceded by a consonant while the latter is not followed by any letter. The former will be sounded like n while the later will be sounded like m. So the pronunciation of the former is Ik Onkaar while the pronunciation of the later is OM. Example of similar case is the pronunciation of anusvaar in the word संस्कृतं. The first anusvaar on स is pronounced similar to n while the the later anusvaar on त is sounded as m. Therefore the word is pronounced like Sanskritam. However, irrespective of the pronunciation, the word always means same thing i.e. OM.
Following are the verses from SGGS where the meaning of OM is explained.

Veerji, my effort here is to spread the bani of our honorable Gurus to as many people as possible. Same is the objective of various Sikh organizations as well. Please let me know if you find any mistake anywhere.
ReplyDeleteDear sir, with respect, you explain ek ongkar very well but then saying and adopting that it means OM is HIGHLY OBJECTIONABLE. Aside and apart from that it means om OR NOT, you need to continue using ek ongkar in the rest of your efforts n NOT use om AT ALL as a substitute. It sends negative signals that you may wish to avoid in your endeavor.
